What Is Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool that lets you add and manage tracking codes (tags) on your website without modifying the site's code directly. It's essential for managing Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Google Ads conversions, and more.

Step 1: Create an Account

Go to tagmanager.google.com and click Create Account.

Step 2: Set Up a Container

Enter your company name, select Web as the target platform, and click Create. Accept the Terms of Service.

Step 3: Install the GTM Code

GTM provides two code snippets:

  • Snippet 1 — Goes in the <head> of every page
  • Snippet 2 — Goes immediately after the opening <body> tag

If you use WordPress, install a plugin like GTM4WP. For custom sites, add the code to your template files.

Step 4: Verify Installation

Use the Preview mode in GTM or install the Tag Assistant Chrome extension to confirm GTM is loading correctly.
